South Korean police summon whistleblowers over ruling party leader's ”opinion-shaping team” allegations for investigation
Regarding the allegations that Han Dong-hoon, the head of the ruling party People Power Party, ran a public opinion formation team (comment team) while he was Minister of Justice, the South Korean police have filed a criminal complaint against the civic group representative who is the accuser.
On the 25th, the civic group "Citizens Action for Justice" announced that its permanent representative Kim Han-mae would appear at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's Public Crimes Investigation Unit at 2 p.m. on the 26th.
In July, the group filed a complaint against Han with the High-Ranking Public Officials Crime Investigation Agency on suspicion of abuse of power, obstruction of the exercise of rights, and obstruction of business through fraud.
The case has been transferred to the police, who plan to merge the investigation with an earlier case in which the Fatherland Reform Party and others filed charges against Han over the same allegations.
The existence of the opinion formation team was confirmed on July 9 by former National Power Youth Leader Jang Ye-chan.
This was revealed when the committee member claimed on SBS Radio that "a separate team had been in place to manage public opinion and create friendly online public opinion since I was Minister of Justice."
Omote denies having any involvement, saying he has never paid money, hired anyone or run a team.
