South Korean prosecutors seek four-month prison sentence for woman in her 30s who insulted singer IU, who pleaded for leniency on the grounds of ”mental illness”

South Korean prosecutors have requested a four-month prison sentence for a woman in her 30s who was put on trial for posting malicious comments about singer and actress IU.

The prosecution held a final hearing for a woman in her 30s, Ms. A, who was indicted on charges of insulting IU. On the same day, the prosecution requested the court to sentence Ms. A to four months in prison.
According to the prosecution's investigation, Mr. A was tried on suspicion of writing four comments in April 2022 that disparaged IU's costumes, singing ability, and comments.
At the closing hearing, Mr. A pleaded for leniency, saying, "I just said simple symbols," and, "I suffer from a mental illness and my writing skills are poor. I hope for a lighter sentence."
A's lawyer also said, "I expressed my opinion based on the facts," and "Although there are some unpleasant and insulting expressions, I don't think it constitutes an insult."
IU has been steadily taking legal action against the malicious comments. On the 11th, IU's management office EDAM Entertainment announced that they would not be taking legal action against the artist.
"So far, there are a total of 180 defendants, and we are continuing to file additional charges," the company said.
He also said, "The sentences or punishments handed down so far are six cases of fines (former summary punishments), three cases of suspended prosecution with the condition of completing education, and one case of suspended prosecution with the condition of being entrusted to the probation office."
In the case of those who have continued to harass IU through various websites, the prosecution will determine that the crime is serious and will formally request a trial (previously known as a public trial) rather than a summary procedure.

Meanwhile, Mr. A's first trial sentence is scheduled to take place on the 3rd of next month.
