The company announced that it had received a positive result from the preliminary evaluation of the World Heritage Site of Hanyang.
The UNESCO World Heritage Site Registration Assessment (WHA) is a new system introduced by UNESCO in 2021 to increase the possibility of a site being registered as a World Heritage Site.
Goyang Special City, Seoul City, and Gyeonggi Province are planning to submit a preliminary evaluation application for the "Hanyang Capital Walls" (Bukhansanseong Fortress, Hanyang Capital Walls, and Dangchundae Fortress) in September 2023.
The document was submitted to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) reviewed it for about a year, after which the results were received.
The International Council on Monuments and Sites is responsible for the assessment of cultural heritage, while the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is responsible for the assessment of natural heritage.
The evaluation will be carried out through a document review that will take about a year, without conducting a formal inspection. The International Council on Monuments and Sites stated in its evaluation results that "Hanyang's capital wall meets the requirements for outstanding universal value based on the inscription criteria.
The report also suggested that the site could be protected and managed by a number of measures, including the possibility of conducting additional comparative analysis and strengthening the system for protecting and managing the heritage.
The criteria for inscription are that the item is unique, or at least original, evidence of a cultural tradition or civilization that is still existing or has disappeared.
The plan is to incorporate the suggestions, and in the future, the government will systematically proceed with domestic and international procedures, such as selecting "application subjects" for World Heritage status to the National Heritage Agency.
