The four areas are AI safety evaluation, policy research, international cooperation, and research and development (R&D). The budget for operation is 8 billion won (about 869.98 million yen) for the R&D department and 4 billion won for the others.
Kim Myung Ji, director of the AI Safety Research Institute, said, "Our institute is not a regulatory agency, but it is focused on identifying obstacles that prevent Korean AI companies from becoming globally competitive.
The government will operate an AI consortium centered on the institute, and also set up the AI Security Council, an organization established by various countries to evaluate the safety of AI.
The company plans to expand its reach by joining the AI Safety Institute (AISI) network, which currently has branches in the US, UK, Japan, Singapore and Canada.
South Korea's AI safety research institutes include private companies such as Samsung Research, Kakao, LG AI Research Institute, and SK Telecom KT, as well as Seoul University, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and Yeongdeungpo University.
The project is being held in collaboration with 24 educational institutions from the industry-academia-research sector, including Yonsei University and Korea University.
