Record snowfall in November causes multiple accidents across South Korea
South Korea experienced an unusually heavy snowfall in November, covering the capital region and other parts of the country. This caused a variety of disruptions, including personal injuries, traffic accidents, and power outages.
Heavy snowfall that occurred over two days from the 27th to the 28th of this month caused problems for people commuting to and from work. In fact, the amount of snowfall in the Seoul area was the third highest since modern meteorological observation began in 1907.
As of 8 a.m. on the 27th, the snowfall measured at the meteorological observatory in Jongno-gu, Seoul, was 28.6 cm, the largest on March 24, 1922 (31 cm) and January 31, 1969 (30 cm).
It was ranked third after that. Heavy snowfall also occurred in other parts of the country besides Seoul. As of 8 a.m. on the 27th, the heaviest snowfall was recorded in Choin-gu, Yongin, Gyeonggi-do.
Baegum 47.5cm △ Suwon 43cm △ Pyeongchang Taehwa 30.3cm △ Jincheon National Meteorological Satellite Center 39.1cm △ Jinan
The total was 24.2 cm. This unusually heavy snowfall caused a series of accidents across the country. The particular feature of this snowfall was that it was heavy, wet snow rather than light, dry snow, which resulted in many collapses.
On the 27th, at a golf driving range in Pyeongtaek, the upper iron net collapsed, hitting two workers who were clearing snow, and a man in his 30s was taken to the hospital in cardiac arrest.
On the same day, the roof of a pedestrian walkway at an apartment reconstruction site in Karak-dong, Songpa-gu, Seoul also collapsed, leaving three people seriously injured and taken to the hospital.
There were also many traffic accidents, both big and small. On the 27th, at around 6:44 a.m., a car crashed between Seoul and Yangyang in Hongcheon-gun, Gangwon-do.
Near the Sosol Tunnel on the expressway, a car that had slipped on a snowy road collided with a 25-ton dump truck, and three other vehicles then collided in succession. A woman in her 80s was killed in the accident.
At around 5:49 pm on the same day, a massive chain reaction accident involving 53 vehicles occurred on a road in Heojaemyeon, Wonju City. 11 people were injured, and 3 were hospitalized.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, this unusual heavy snowfall was caused by a combination of high seawater temperatures, a cut-off low pressure system, and cold air from the north. The jet stream that blocks cold air from the north weakened,
As the low pressure system swirls counterclockwise, cold air from the north rides this rotation and flows into Korea, where the temperature drops sharply and meets the warm water vapor from the West Sea, explosively forming snow clouds.
Experts say that this unusually heavy snowfall is a typical example of global warming. It is necessary to take proactive action to prepare for future abnormal weather.
