According to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, the incident took place between 9:35 a.m. and 1:53 p.m.
Five Chinese and six Russian military aircraft entered the KADIZ in the Sea of Japan (Korean names: Donghae (East Sea) and Namhae (South Sea)) and then left without violating airspace.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff said, "Our military identified Chinese and Russian military aircraft before they entered the KADIZ and deployed Air Force fighter jets to take tactical measures to prepare for any contingency situation.
The South Korean Ministry of National Defense revealed that Woo Kyung-seok, head of the Regional Security Cooperation Task Force, had made a phone call to protest to the Chinese and Russian defense attachés in South Korea that afternoon.
The South Korean Ministry of National Defense expressed regret over the Chinese and Russian military aircraft's incursion into the KADIZ and their long flight without prior notice, and stated that such actions are a factor that unnecessarily increases tensions in the region.
"The Chinese and Russian armies have been engaged in joint strategic drills, and we have strongly urged them to take appropriate measures to prevent recurrence," the ministry said in a statement on its official social media account.
Since 2019, China and Russia have sent military aircraft into the KADIZ once or twice a year for joint training and other purposes, but there has been no prior notice until now.
