The US Department of Commerce will ban the import and sale of cars equipped with software related to China or Russia from 2027. In 2030, the hardware will also be restricted.
In response, Hyundai Motor Group, together with the Korean government and other companies, has requested the U.S. government to simplify the conformity review process, clarify the definition of technical terms, and postpone the implementation of the regulations.
They are requesting that technologies such as DER (laser detection and ranging) be excluded from the regulations because they do not link with external networks.
Furthermore, when parts are changed, a change report including details of the software structure must be submitted within 30 days.
The group has requested that the time limit for certification be extended to 60 days for regulations that require certification bodies to comply with the new rules.
"With the U.S. ban on the use of Chinese software, the group is looking to expand into North America," said Lim Eun-young, a researcher at Samsung Securities.
"The company will likely play a central role in supplying hardware for the electric vehicle (EV) and autonomous vehicle market in China."
