Japan's Shimane nuclear power plant resumes operation for the first time in 13 years... Same model as Fukushima nuclear power plant
Kyodo News reported that Japan's Chugoku Electric Power Co. restarted the Shimane Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 reactor in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, on the west side of Honshu on the 7th. The reactor was shut down in January 2012 for regular inspection.
This will be the first restart in about 13 years since the plant was shut down. Kyodo News reported that Chugoku Electric Power plans to start generating and transmitting electricity later this month, and to resume commercial operations early next month.
Shimane Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 is a boiling water reactor, the same type as the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, where an accident occurred immediately after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011.
This is the first time that a boiling water reactor has been restarted since the Great East Japan Earthquake, following the resumption of operation of Unit 2 at the Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant in Miyagi Prefecture in October.
This is the second time that the Shimane Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 has been restarted since the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant disaster. Shimane Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 is the 14th nuclear power plant to be restarted since the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant disaster. Shimane Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 is the only nuclear power plant in a prefectural capital in Japan.
It began commercial operation in 1989 and was shut down in January 2012 for regular inspections.
