「B1A4」サンドゥル、「観客の表情を見ながら演技した。ひと味違った経験」
B1A4's Sandeul, ”I acted while watching the audience's expressions. It was a unique experience”... A big success in the musical ”Who Lives in the Kuroi House?”
"A show I've always wanted to do" Idol group B1A4's Sandeul looks back on the moment he received an offer to star in the musical "Who Lives in Kuroi's House?"
In a recent interview at a cafe in Seocho-gu, Seoul, Sandeul said, "It was rumored to be a good production, and I was surprised to see it grabbing the attention of Daehangno.
"Kuroi House" is set during the Japanese colonial period, and tells the story of Hye-eun, who has lost all hope after losing her brother, but is led by an unknown power.
It is a comical play depicting the episodes that occur when the protagonist visits the Kuroi Mansion, an abandoned mansion inhabited by the earthbound spirit Oki and the vengeful ghosts who each have their own wishes.
The group performs a fantasy anime-like story with numbers in various genres such as bossa nova and Korean traditional music. They made their musical debut in 2012 with "Brothers Were Brave."
Sandeul took his first steps on the Daehangno stage by joining the Kuroi House. Sandeul and his team said, "Since our debut, we have only performed at large theaters. This is our first time performing at a small theater in Daehangno.
It feels fresh," he said. "Since I'm performing on stage where I can see the audience's expressions in detail, I'm working hard to stay focused during the performance."
Sandeul will be expanding his activities into the musical field and appearing in the "ALL SHOOK
UP", "Cinderella", "The Three Musketeers", "When I was 30", "Iron Mask", "Shah
She gained experience by appearing in many productions, including "Rock Holmes: The Missing Children," "1967 Harlan County," and "Next to Normal." "Kuroi Residence" was her first appearance.
Sandeul ran and rolled on stage, his hair soaked with sweat, exerting himself to the max to bring energy to the play.
Sandeul said, "I learned from my fellow actors who had more experience and adapted to comical dramas. I was able to interact well with the audience and get big laughs from them.
"I feel comfortable and rewarded at the same time," he said. Hye-eun is also a character who brings the audience to tears with scenes and numbers that express her sad feelings for her brother who died before her in the independence movement.
Sandeul said, "I focused on expressing the delicate feelings of Hye-eun, who lives with a mixture of love and resentment towards her brother. There is no right answer when it comes to interpreting a character, so I'm still trying to figure it out."
"Kuroi House" depicts the process of the earthbound spirit Oki and the evil spirits being able to go to heaven thanks to Hae-un and leaving the mansion.
"The highlight is seeing how Hye-eun changes as a result of the encounter," he said. "I was impressed by the reaction, 'It was as refreshing as going to a sauna.' I hope that 'Kuroi House' will attract more viewers.
"I want to blow off the stress of being a singer," he said with a smile. Sandeul began his musical career in his second year after debut. Ten years have passed since he started working as both a singer and an actor.
Sandeul recalled, "When I first read the script for 'Brothers Were Brave,' I cried my eyes out, and that's what made me want to try my hand at musicals."
The joy I feel when I'm performing as a singer and an actor in a musical used to be very different, but nowadays they're almost the same. It's become so natural for me to be both a singer and an actor.
" Sandeul said that he has been working with the belief that "there is nothing I can't do," just like the message in "Kuroi House." After a hiatus due to his military enlistment, he returned to full activity.
Looking back on 2024, the first year filled with just the members, he said it was a year spent searching for Sandeul. Sandeul said, "After we resumed our activities, I didn't hesitate at all, unlike before.
"But this year, I've been working almost without a day off and I've regained my senses," he said. "Next year, I'll be releasing a solo album in addition to my team activities and musicals, and I hope to receive the love of my fans."
"I will work hard to repay them," he said. At the end of the interview, he expressed his hope that "I want to be someone who can still stand on stage even in my 70s."
"Kuroi Residence" will run until January 19th next year.
