The mastermind behind the "14.5 billion won (approximately 1.53 billion yen) disappearance incident" that occurred at a casino in Jeju has been arrested by police for the first time in about four years.
On the 9th, the Jeju National Police Agency arrested a man on suspicion of stealing 14.5 billion won from the VIP safe at the Landing Casino in Jeju Shinhwa World.
The police revealed that they had arrested and referred to prosecutors a suspect, a Malaysian Chinese executive (58), on a business-related offence under the Act on Aggravated Punishment of Specified Economic Crimes.
In January 2020, suspect A was in charge of managing the funds of the Landing Casino in Jeju Shinhwa World, but was arrested after being charged with attracting casino customers.
He conspired with four other Chinese employees of the company, including B (36), to embezzle the money from the safe. According to News 1, the crime of suspect A was revealed about a year later in January 2021, when he was working for the company.
After applying for leave, A could not be contacted for a week. The company became suspicious and opened the safe managed by A, finding that 14.5 billion won in cash was missing.
Police were concerned about how suspect A managed to carry 14.5 billion won in cash undetected at the time of the crime. The 14.5 billion won was packed in 20 kilogram boxes of 50,000 won bills.
The weight of the cash was so great that 14 to 15 bags would be needed. However, while searching for the whereabouts of the cash, the police discovered a bundle of cash in an unexpected place. 8.15 billion won of the 14.5 billion won was in the safe next door.
The owner of the safe next door was a Chinese man in his 40s, B, who worked as a casino agent. At the time of the crime, he and A entered the safe and carried out the bundles of cash.
B had supported the escaped suspect A in living abroad for four years, including helping him move to Dubai.
However, suspect A failed to take the stolen cash overseas.
It was confirmed that the cash was seized after a police investigation began. The police have seized 13.4 billion won (approximately 1.41 billion yen) out of the 14.5 billion won in cash.
During police questioning, suspect A reportedly stated, "At the time, the company's management was replaced, and I was instructed by the top brass of the previous management to transport the money."
Police plan to refer suspect A to the prosecutor's office on the 5th and arrest his accomplices.
