The reappointment vote for anti-cryptocurrency U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Commissioner Caroline Crenshaw has been postponed.
On the 12th (local time), Bloomberg reported that the Senate committee voted to reappoint Democratic Commissioner Caroline Crenshaw to the SEC.
The hearing was originally scheduled for the morning of December 11th as part of a Senate Banking Committee hearing, but was postponed by Sen. Sherrod Brown, Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee.
The chairman postponed the vote minutes before the meeting was to begin. Republican senators then blocked Chairman Brown's request to hold a vote that day. Chairman Brown
He later issued a statement accusing "corporate special interests of waging a disgusting smear campaign against Crenshaw."
The delay in Crenshaw's reelection vote could come as President Donald Trump takes office next year.
There is still a chance that Republicans will have a 3-2 majority in the SEC after the election. Also, the new Trump administration is considering nominating Republican Paul Atkins to replace Crenshaw.
On December 4, President-elect Trump nominated Atkins as the next SEC chairman, and experts are wondering how the Senate Banking Committee will decide who will be the next chairman.
Depending on how quickly he acts, he expects his appointment to be confirmed between March and April 2025. If reappointed, Crenshaw would be the only Democratic commissioner on the SEC.
Meanwhile, many in the cryptocurrency industry are calling for Crenshaw to step down. Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong
On December 9, X (formerly Twitter) posted, "Crenshaw is a failed SEC Commissioner," and "Crenshaw tried to block a Bitcoin ETF.
"The Senate Banking Committee is one to watch. The crypto community is watching this vote closely," he said.
Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seifert
On December 7, Seyffart posted on X, "Crenshaw is an 'ally' of SEC Chairman Gary Gensler.
"Not only is he a strong proponent of cryptocurrencies, he is even more opposed to cryptocurrencies than Gensler."
