Medical community criticizes President Yoon Seok-yeol's speech to the nation for not apologizing for punishment of medical professionals (South Korea)
On the 12th, the medical community criticized President Yoon Seok-yeol's address to the nation, saying that he did not apologize for the emergency martial law declaration, which explicitly stated that "medical professionals, including medical residents, who leave the country" should be punished.
The Korean Society of Medical Education, an academic organization for medical education, issued a statement saying, "There has been no apology or reflection for the decree that designated medical personnel as anti-national forces and the punishment of medical personnel that it contained."
"We condemn the speech against the people," he said. "In this chaotic political situation, medical personnel are protecting the nation, the people, and the lives and health of patients.
"We will strongly support and stand with the National Assembly, the people, and medical personnel who are working to eliminate the possibility of this happening," he added.
The document included the following: "All medical personnel, including medical residents, who are on strike or have left the medical field, must return to their jobs faithfully within 48 hours, and any violations will be dealt with under martial law."
However, in President Yoon's address to the nation delivered at the Presidential Office in Yongsan on the same day, he made clear that the guidelines for certain occupations were only for medical personnel.
There was no mention of the individuals involved.
