South Korean journalist pays compensation to former ruling party leader for ”Fei News”
"Yoo Si-min, a journalist and former chairman of the Roh Moo-hyun Foundation, suffered damages due to the spread of fake news," the lawsuit said.
It has been revealed that Han Dong-hoon, former leader of the ruling party People Power Party, who filed a lawsuit for damages, will be paid 30 million won (approximately 3.24 million yen) in compensation.
According to the court on the 23rd, the ruling in this case was finalized because former CEO Han and former chairman Yoo did not file an appeal within 14 days of receiving the ruling.
From December 2019 to December 2020, former Chairman Yoo repeatedly spread false information about former Chairman Han through radio and YouTube channels, thereby tarnishing his reputation.
In June of this year, the Supreme Court confirmed a fine of 5 million won (approximately 540,000 yen) for allegedly damaging property. Since then, Han has been fined 500 million won (approximately 53.93 million yen) separately from the criminal trial.
On the 4th of this month, the Seoul Central District Court ruled that former CEO Han had filed a lawsuit against former chairman Yoo for damages, stating, "Yoo Shi-min must pay 30 million won in compensation to Han Dong-hoon.
The court ruled that three of the five statements made by former chairman Yoo constituted defamation through false accusations, and awarded him 1,000 million yen in compensation for each statement.
The court assessed the damages at 10,000 won and handed down the above-mentioned judgment.
