The Korean National Police Agency arrested a man in his 20s, a suspected habitual fraudster, on the afternoon of the 25th in Incheon, South Korea.
Mr. A traveled to Japan in March 2023 and between July 2023 and April 2024, he engaged in online second-hand trading sites and X (formerly Twitter)
Mr. A posted false posts on websites such as Twitter, claiming to sell concert tickets for famous singers and Apple Watches. Mr. A had the victims transfer the transaction amount in advance and then sent the products by courier.
He is accused of defrauding 780 victims of about 200 million won by pretending to be a scammer. The Uljin Police Station in Gyeongsangbuk-do and other authorities have issued a warrant for the suspect on suspicion of fraud.
In response to a request from Uljin Police Station, the National Police Agency issued an Interpol international wanted poster for the suspect, designated Mr. A as a high-level fugitive, and began intensive pursuit of him.
In order to arrest the suspect, the National Police Agency has been holding joint working-level meetings with the National Investigation Headquarters, the local police station that handled the wanted cases, and the police liaison officer dispatched to the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Fukuoka.
At the Interpol Fugitive Apprehension Strategy Conference (Infra-SEAF) held in Seoul in June 2024, we provided tracking clues to the Japanese Interpol side and helped with the arrest of suspects.
As a result, on July 30, the Fukuoka Police Department was called to a separate incident and discovered the suspect at the scene. During the identification process, they confirmed that the suspect was wanted by Interpol and immediately
After that, the police of both Japan and South Korea and the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Fukuoka monitored the progress of the suspect's criminal trial and discussed the timing and method of his deportation.
At the 7th Japan-Korea-China Police Cooperation Conference, the National Police Agency's international cooperation officer directly requested the Japanese National Police Agency's Deputy Director-General for International Mutual Assistance to quickly repatriate the suspects.
The two sides agreed that the suspect will be taken into custody by a South Korean escort officer on December 25, when the suspect's local criminal trial ends.
After the suspect is extradited, the police plan to continue their investigation into not only the cases that have already been accepted, but also any additional crimes he may have committed before entering Japan or in Korea.
An international cooperation officer at the National Police Agency said, "This repatriation is the first time in about four years since November 2020 that a fugitive has been deported from Japan, based on the mutual assistance foundation and cooperation system that has been built up until now.
"This is a case where the suspect was deported," he said, adding, "We will continue to pool the power of international cooperation to pursue vicious frauds that directly affect people's lives, such as secondhand trade fraud, which is on the rise, and bring them to justice."
” he emphasized.
