South Korea arrests man in his 30s for abusing his 25-month-old premature daughter to death
The father of a couple who abused their 25-month-old daughter to death in Daejeon, South Korea, has been arrested and sent to the prosecution. The Daejeon National Police Agency said, "Under the Special Act on the Punishment of Child Abuse Crimes, the father was arrested and sent to the prosecution.
"The father, suspect A, in his 30s, was arrested and sent to the prosecutor's office on the 26th on suspicion of child abuse resulting in death," the prosecutor said. The mother, suspect B, also in her 30s, is currently under investigation without indictment.
The couple are accused of abusing their 25-month-old daughter, C, to death at their residence in Daejeon's Seo-gu district on the 16th.
The couple called emergency services in the early hours of the morning, reporting that their daughter was not breathing, and she was taken to a nearby university hospital where she died nine hours later.
The police, who were notified by medical staff, began an investigation and confirmed the fact of abuse based on the results of an autopsy conducted by the National Forensic Service, among other things, and made an emergency arrest of the couple on the 17th of this month.
As a result, it was confirmed that C-chan had died of cerebral hemorrhage caused by head injuries. The couple also admitted to the abuse during the investigation and reportedly complained about the stress of raising the child.
Police believe that the couple's abuse had been ongoing since C-chan was released from the hospital in October.
C-chan was born prematurely and spent a long time in the hospital. Even after she was discharged, she had to go to home with a gastroenterologist to feed her.
It was discovered that she had been living with a fistula inserted in her abdomen. Before C-chan's death, the couple had approached the adoption agency and the ward office about adopting her, citing the financial burden of the hospital's medical expenses.
The investigation revealed that the couple had been making inquiries. However, they had a certain income and were not on welfare. The couple also had three children, who were separated from their parents at the time of their arrest.
However, no evidence of abuse of other children was found. Police plan to refer suspect B to the prosecution after investigating the matter.
