The late Lee Sung-kyun died on the 27th December last year while under investigation by the police on charges of cannabis and moxibustion under the Narcotics Control Act. He was 48 years old. He had been under police investigation since October of the same year, and this happened four days after his third summons, which was followed by a strong investigation.
Lee Seong-kyun was tested negative for drugs in all of his precise examinations, including a simple reagent test. He adhered to his position that he was a victim of extortion and even requested a lie detector investigation to determine the veracity of his statements with the extortionists, but was eventually found dead.
Subsequently, the Cultural and Artistic Solidarity Council, including director Pong Joon-ho, director Jang Han-jung, actor Kim Whi-seong and singer Yoon Jung-shin, held a press conference to urge the investigation of the truth about the late Lee Sung Kyun, who was subjected to a severe character murder before his death. They raised their voice saying that the ‘Late Lee Sung Kyun Prevention Act’ must be enacted and that ‘we must check whether there are any problems with the current laws and regulations for the protection of human rights regarding the prohibition of the disclosure of criminal cases and investigations, and start work on the necessary regulatory amendments to the laws and regulations’.
Even until recently, the film industry's nostalgia towards Lee Sung Kyun has continued. Actors who worked with the deceased, as well as many colleagues in the entertainment industry, continue to mourn him. Various film festivals and award ceremonies have also had time to mourn the deceased. At the Pusan International Film Festival held in October, a special programme in tribute to the late Lee Sung-kyun, ‘Beautiful Man, Lee Sung-kyun’, was held and six of his best-known films were screened.
On the 19th, Mr A, the head of an entertainment centre, and Mr B, a former film actor, were sentenced to three years and six months and four years and two months respectively for allegedly blackmailing the late Lee Sung-kyun and receiving 300 million won (approximately 30 million yen).
Meanwhile, the late Lee Sung-kyun made his debut in 1999 and appeared in the dramas White Tower, Pasta and My Dear Mister - My Uncle, as well as the films Going to the End, Parasite: Family in the Halfway House and Sleep.
