He posted a message satirizing President Yoon Seok-yeol's "fire order," but quickly deleted it. At around 10:08 a.m. that day, Lee posted a message on Facebook titled "Shoot for tomorrow! -
Butch and Sundance. Fire for the people! Yoon and Han." The phrase comes from the 1969 film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which was released in 2013.
The film tells the story of Butch and Sundance, who led a bank robbery gang in the American West, escaping to Bolivia. The post was written after President Yoon directly told the commander on the ground to "fire the gun" under the state of emergency.
The post was interpreted as a satire of the prosecution's investigation results, which said Lee ordered, "Break down the doors (of the National Assembly) and enter at any cost." However, Lee quickly deleted the post.
The ruling People Power Party criticized the inappropriate posting, which occurred just an hour after the Muan Airport accident.
"It is unfortunate and regrettable that the leader of the largest party and the leading presidential candidate has no regard for the people or their safety," the party's chief spokesman told reporters at the National Assembly.
Cho Seung-rye, chief spokesman for the Democratic Party of Korea, told reporters, "It's a matter of the time lag (between the incident and the posting), and it is an exaggeration to interpret it in a malicious way."
Meanwhile, at around 9:03 a.m. on the same day, Jeju Air Flight 7C2216 from Bangkok, Thailand, crashed into the runway wall during landing at Muan International Airport. 181 people were on board.
The two people on board who have been identified so far are crew members. The Fire Department said it presumes the remaining 179 people have died.
