I would like to offer my deepest apologies to the people," he said. In his inaugural address, which he delivered in writing that afternoon, Chairman Kwon said, "Above all, the Korean people are currently going through very hard times, but the power of the people, the National Assembly, and the government has been extremely strong.
"I am very sorry that I was not able to fulfill my role as I should have," Kwon said. "The power of the people will take the lead. We will spur change and innovation. We will sincerely reflect on our actions and listen more to the voices of the people."
Regarding the Democratic Party of Korea and Lee Jae-myung, he said, "We should leave the judiciary's role to the judiciary and the National Assembly should fulfill its role.
It is time to do so. If national politics are paralyzed by successive impeachments, the damage will only be passed on to the people. I respectfully request that you stop this legislative outrage."
He also said, "The ruling and opposition parties' national political consultation meeting ran aground without even being able to get started due to the impeachment of Acting President Han Deok-soo. Now, the government must reform politics.
"I believe this is the most urgent task that the council must undertake. I propose that the ruling and opposition parties reconvene the national political consultative body as soon as possible."
Chairman Kwon said, "We would like to express our sincere gratitude to those who sadly lost their lives in the Jeju Air passenger plane crash.
"We would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the victims. The People's Power will work closely with the government and do its utmost to quickly resolve the accident and provide support to the victims."
