米韓外交長官、6日ソウルで会談...米韓同盟・北朝鮮問題協議
US and South Korean foreign ministers meet in Seoul on the 6th to discuss US-South Korean alliance and North Korea issue
The diplomatic commanders of the United States and Japan will visit South Korea in succession. Concerns are growing over a diplomatic vacuum amid the Dec. 3 emergency state of emergency and the impeachment political situation.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on the 3rd that U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken will hold a summit in Seoul on the morning of the 6th, and that this will be an opportunity to demonstrate that South Korean diplomacy is functioning normally even under the leadership of the Finance Minister.
He said he plans to meet with Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yol to discuss the U.S.-ROK alliance, Japan-U.S.-ROK cooperation, North Korea issues, and regional and global issues.
He is reportedly planning to visit Japan afterwards. This visit to South Korea is meant as a farewell visit before the inauguration of the Trump administration on the 20th.
With the second term of the Trump administration being inaugurated on the 20th, the US-ROK alliance and Japan-US-ROK cooperation that the Biden administration has built up are expected to be used as an opportunity to confirm each other's will to resolve the North Korean issue.
However, it is expected that the government will emphasize that it should continue. Since the state of emergency was declared on the 3rd of last month, communication between the South Korean and US governments has not been smooth, but Secretary of State Blinken has said that
By visiting South Korea as part of his visit, it is hoped that he will be able to emphasize the strength of the U.S.-South Korea alliance and allay some of the concerns about a diplomatic vacuum.
Japanese Foreign Minister Iwao also visited Seoul around the 13th of this month and held talks with Minister Cho.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and the two sides are expected to confirm their intention to continue cooperation.
