More than 170 million people travel across regions on first day of China's ”Spring Festival” - Chinese reports

The "Spring Festival" (a special transportation system for the Lunar New Year) began operating in China on the 14th. This year's Spring Festival will run for 40 days from January 14th to February 22nd.
According to the 2025 Comprehensive Transportation and Spring Transport Task Force, on the first day of the new year, the total number of people traveling across regions is estimated to exceed 170 million.
By transportation mode, the number of rail users was 10.3 million, the number of road users was about 160 million, the number of waterway users was 530,000, and the number of civil aviation users was 2.04 million.
During this year's Chinese New Year holiday, the number of people traveling between regions is expected to reach 9 billion, up about 7% from the same period last year. The largest number of people traveling by car will be those traveling by car, exceeding 7.2 billion people.
This year's Spring Festival is expected to fall earlier than usual, and the number of students, migrant workers, people returning home, and tourists is expected to increase around the time of the festival, resulting in high levels of congestion.
