Former Fatherland Reform Party Chairman Cho Kuk: ”The fight will end only when President Yoon Seok-yeol is severely punished and a new government is established” - South Korea releases additional letters from prison
Cho Kuk, former leader of the Fatherland Reform Party, who is currently incarcerated in Seoul Detention House, responded to the news of President Yoon Seok-yeol's arrest by saying, "The battle is not over," and calling for severe punishment from judicial authorities.
Hwang Hee-sun, secretary-general of the Fatherland Reform Party, wrote on Fei Book on the 16th, "Former Chairman Cho Kuk sent me a letter. Hearing the news of President Yoon Seok-yeol's arrest yesterday,
"It contains feelings that I was not able to include in my past notes," he wrote, posting a photo of the handwritten letter and envelope. The day before, he had left a message saying that he wanted the letter to be made public if President Yoon was arrested.
Following the release of a handwritten note stating, "The Fatherland Reform Party kept its promise: 'Three years is too long!'" he released an additional, more lengthy letter from prison in which he revealed his true feelings.
Cho said, "Yoon Seok-yeol, the mastermind behind the revolt, has finally been arrested. He only uses the 'rule of law' when he is trying to seize power or oppress his opponents and critics, and acts as if he is above the law.
"Far from reflecting on the unconstitutional and illegal emergency martial law, they have brazenly lied in front of the people and, fearing punishment, have been hiding behind the Presidential Bodyguard's staff," he wrote.
"These are the words of a coward hiding in plain sight," Cho wrote. "This is a victory for the people who fought to restore constitutional democracy in the cold, snowy weather of winter, wrapped in silver foil blankets. But the battle is not over."
He added, "Yoon Seok-yeol must be arrested and indicted, and severely punished, just like other complicities in the rebellion. The Constitutional Court must swiftly proceed with the impeachment trial and reduce the vacuum in constitutional government."
He called for judicial proceedings and stressed that "the struggle will only end when the forces that led and supported the rebellion are brought to legal and political trial and a new government that upholds democratic constitutional government is established."
Finally, he said, "Winter cannot defeat spring. We must unite and fight to defeat the forces that have tried to turn Korea into a 'kingdom of frozen earth' and to bring back the 'spring of Korea.'
Let's go," he concluded the letter.
