Lawmakers to attend US President Donald Trump's inauguration to 'inform people about Korea's political situation'
Yoon Sang Hyun, a member of the National Assembly's Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee delegation to the U.S. to attend the inauguration of U.S. President Donald Trump, said, "The political situation in Korea is a matter of public opinion.
"I will clearly convey my thoughts and position," he said. At a press conference at the National Assembly on the 18th, he said, "I hope to address the concerns of the international community regarding the impeachment trial of President Yoon Seok-yeol and the martial law situation on December 3rd."
"I intend to thoroughly explain the mature will and efforts of the Korean people to prevent the collapse of the constitutional order of the Republic of Korea and to normalize the functions of the state."
He continued, "Yeong Kim, a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives of South Korea, said that the forces leading the impeachment movement against President Yoon Seok-yeol should continue with the current situation.
"If the talks go ahead, North Korea and China could use it to weaken the U.S.-ROK alliance," he said. "Yoon emphasized the importance of security and economic cooperation among Japan, the U.S. and South Korea, and has achieved close cooperation among the three countries.
"We will inform the US of the efforts of the Suk-yeol administration," he added. "Currently, South Korea is facing serious obstacles to national politics due to the rampage of a large opposition party, and the country is in a state of flux due to allegations of espionage by Chinese nationals.
"We are facing challenges including threats to our national security, but we will continue to emphasize the importance of Korea's role and cooperation between the United States and South Korea amid the rapidly changing domestic and international situations," he said.
