On the 19th, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba commented on the arrest of President Yoon Seok-youl, "Even if the (South Korean) administration changes, the importance of Japan-South Korea relations will not change.
According to Yonhap News, Prime Minister Ishiba appeared on an NHK program that day and said, "(This year) marks the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and South Korea," and commented on the major reforms that were made during President Yoon's time.
He also said he was currently coordinating a date for his first summit with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who will take office on the 20th (local time).
Prime Minister Ishiba said that the specific date has "not been decided yet," and that "we are proceeding with the arrangements to hold it around this time."
He also asked, "What role should Japan play in foreign policy, including security, the economy, and the Ukraine issue?"
"We need to be proactive in speaking out on these issues, taking our national interests into account," he said, explaining his preparations for his first summit meeting with President-elect Trump.
