”Imperial Comfort Woman” Park Yu-ha wins second civil trial... 9 years later, opposite ruling = South Korea

In South Korea, comfort women victims lost their defamation lawsuit against Professor Park Yu-ha of Sejong University in an appeals court. Professor Park was previously found not guilty in a criminal trial and is expected to be found not guilty in the civil lawsuit.
The plaintiffs won as expected. On the 22nd, the Seoul High Court announced that, unlike the first trial, they lost the second trial of the damages lawsuit filed by nine comfort women victims, including the late Lee Ok-sun, and their families against Professor Park.
In the first instance, the court awarded compensation of 10 million won each to each of the victims, totaling 90 million won. In July 2014, the plaintiffs claimed that the book described the comfort women as "mental comfort women" and "comfort women."
They filed a lawsuit claiming that 34 statements describing the women as "patriotic maidens who helped soldiers wage the war" and "voluntary prostitutes" constituted defamation, and demanded 30 million won in compensation for each.
At the same time, a criminal trial was held against Professor Park, and the first trial in favor of the comfort women victims was handed down in 2016. However, the second trial was suspended due to the progress of the criminal proceedings.
Professor Park was found not guilty in the first criminal trial in 2017, but was sentenced to a 10 million won fine in the appeal trial the same year.
The case was overturned and he was found not guilty, and he was finally acquitted in April 2024.
