Conversion of old cars to EVs on the rise, demonstration tests being conducted in Korea as well = Korea
Kia Motors UK has unveiled a converted 1993 Pride 5-door LX (Pride) electric vehicle (EV) to celebrate the brand's 80th anniversary in 2024.
The company's UK subsidiary worked with an EV conversion company to convert the Pride into an EV. The Pride is equipped with two 100 gigawatt-hour battery packs, and can travel up to 100km on a single charge.
It has a range of 193 kilometers under the European measurement standard "WLTP." Maximum power is 109 horsepower and maximum torque is 24 kilogram-meters.
Converting these old cars into EVs uses eco-friendly powertrains that do not emit carbon dioxide.
However, the design of the vehicle can be maintained, which is why classic car fans are happy. In particular, in the past few years, attempts to convert internal combustion engine vehicles to EVs have been gaining popularity, particularly in Europe and the United States.
Conversion kits for electric vehicles are also on sale, and the market size is expected to grow from $2.5 billion (USD, approximately 389.535 billion yen) in 2022 to $6.8 billion (approximately 1 trillion yen) in 2030.
There is also a desire for EVs to be introduced in South Korea in 2022. The Yeongam and Mokpo areas in South Jeolla Province have been designated as "modified EV regulation free special zones."
In the special zone, Hyundai's compact sedan Accent and other models are being used as the subject of demonstration tests to verify the technology needed to convert them into EVs.
