Kim Gun-Hee, wife of President Yoon Seok-Yeol, has sent back the results of an investigation into whether her master's thesis at Sookmyung Women's University had plagiarized twice.
The Sookmyung Women's University Research Ethics Committee has concluded that Kim's thesis is plagiarism, and if she does not file an objection by the 12th of this month, Kim will be expelled.
The master's thesis of a woman at Sookmyung University was found to be plagiarized. On the 1st, Sookmyung Women's University said that the research ethics committee confirmed that Kim received the plagiarism result on the 14th of last month.
The research ethics committee sent the results of the plagiarism investigation to Kim twice, but both were returned. Kim's side filed an objection on February 12, 30 days after receiving the results from the 14th.
The Sookmyung Women's University Research Ethics Committee has set a 30-day period for those being investigated to file objections from the date they are notified of the investigation results.
A Sookmyung Women's University official said, "If an objection is filed, the research ethics committee will meet again and announce the final decision based on the results. If no objection is filed, this investigation will be postponed.
The results will be finalized as is. Prior to this, Sookmyung Women's University had provisionally concluded that Kim's thesis was a plagiarism.
Sookmyung Women's University is a university that Kim proposed as her master's thesis in art education in 1999.
As plagiarism allegations grew over the publication of "Study on the Characteristics of Paintings by Paul Klee," a preliminary investigation was launched in 2022. However, no conclusion has been reached so far.
The Democratic Alumni Association of Sookmyung Women's University, which has been raising the plagiarism allegations, also reportedly received official documents related to the plagiarism investigation on the same day. Until now, Sookmyung Women's University has only sent the results of its plagiarism investigation to Kim.
The Democratic Alumni Association said, "Four papers that were not in the reference list were used in Kim's master's thesis without any citations," in the allegations of plagiarism.
This raised confusion.
