Ahn Cheol-soo, a member of the People's Power Party, proposes open talks: ”Constitutional reform is virtually impossible without the decision of Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung” (South Korea)
On the 3rd, Ahn Cheol-soo, a lawmaker from the People Power Party, proposed an open meeting with Lee Jae-myung, chairman of the Democratic Party of Korea, to discuss constitutional reform.
"Postponing the revision of the constitution is abandoning the people and the future, and is an abdication of responsibility as a leader who leads the nation," Ahn wrote on Feibook on the same day.
"The 1987 system has long since outlived its usefulness. From now on, we must put an end to the imperial presidential system that has led to extreme political conflict and strife, and put an end to the tragic repetition of history," he said.
"We must put an end to this cycle of repetition," he added. "Next year, when local elections will be held, is the best time and opportunity for constitutional reform. If we miss the opportunity, constitutional reform will only become more distant again."
He called for the need for constitutional reform. In particular, Ahn wrote about Chairman Lee, "He is the most important decision-maker in terms of constitutional reform. Without Chairman Lee's decision, constitutional reform is virtually impossible."
"The amendment to the Constitution to a Presidential system is a clear plan to realize the anti-ideological and anti-campaign plan pursued by Chairman Lee. I ask you to participate in the constitutional amendment debate, which will determine the future of the Republic of Korea."
Meanwhile, Rep. Ahn held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Center on the same day and said, "We must rebuild the Republic of Korea through constitutional reform," and announced plans to hold a general election next year.
He proposed holding a "constitutional referendum" at the same time as the 9th local elections. Specific methods of constitutional reform include "decentralized four-year re-election reform" and "reform of the single-seat constituency system," and he said that the "Seventh Republic" should be launched.
He sought cooperation from the political world in making this move.
