Kim Yong, former vice president of the Institute for Democracy and a close aide to Lee Jae-myung, chairman of the Democratic Party of Korea, the largest opposition party in South Korea, was found guilty of receiving money and gifts from the Daejang-dong gang in an appeals trial.
On the 6th, the 13th Criminal Division of the Seoul High Court sentenced Kim, who was indicted on charges of violating the Political Funds Act and bribery under the Act on Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, to five years in prison, the same as in the first trial.
The court handed down a fine of 70 million won and a surcharge of 670 million won. Based on the prison sentence, the court lifted Kim's bail (conditional release such as a bond) during the appeal hearing.
Kim was arrested again in court after his arrest. Between April and August 2021, around the time of the party's presidential primary election, Kim was arrested together with Yoo Dong-kyu, former head of the Seongnam Urban Development Corporation, and lawyer Jeong Min-young.
He was put on trial on suspicion of conspiring to receive 847 million won in four installments from private lawyer Nam Wook in the name of presidential election funds.
According to the investigation, 600 million won of this was given to Kim, but the remaining 247 million won was not given to Kim by Yoo.
In addition, Kim served as a standing member of the Seongnam City Council's Urban Construction Committee from February 2013 to April 2014, and was involved in the establishment of the corporation and the Daejang-dong development project.
He is also accused of receiving a total of 190 million won in four installments from Yoo in return for providing favors to the two men. Nam was also sentenced to eight months in prison, the same as in the first trial.
However, he was not detained in court, and Mr. Yoo and Attorney Jeong were acquitted, just as in the first trial.
