Japanese media: ”Japan-US summit succeeds in creating a friendly atmosphere” = Korean report
There is a generally positive mood in Japan regarding the summit meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, which took place at the White House on the 7th (local time) for the first time.
The Mainichi Shimbun commented on the same day, "While former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe built a close relationship with President Trump through golf diplomacy, Prime Minister Ishiba has made a safe start with a strategy of showing sympathy."
The Yomiuri Shimbun also reported that "Prime Minister Ishiba succeeded in creating a friendly atmosphere at the joint press conference with President Trump."
In particular, Prime Minister Ishiba was asked about his impression of President Trump.
"When I saw him on TV, I had the impression that he had a loud voice, a strong personality, and was scary, but when I actually met him, I felt that he was a sincere person with a strong sense of mission," he said at the press conference.
As an example, he cited a scene where laughter broke out during a press conference. President Trump also offered words of praise for Prime Minister Ishiba, saying, "He'll be a great prime minister," and "He's a pretty tough guy."
Kiyomiya, a special correspondent for the Asahi Shimbun's Americas bureau, appeared in the company's video and said, "It seems he made a good first impression."
Not only the atmosphere, but also the results of the meeting have been evaluated as being better than expected.
"There were no unexpected remarks from President Trump that would put pressure on Japan," he said, adding, "In particular, President Trump's comments on Nippon Steel's attempt to acquire USstills are a step forward."
President Trump said at a press conference, "We have agreed to make a large investment, not a purchase," suggesting some kind of new solution. In response, Prime Minister Ishiba also said that USstills should acquire Japanese technology.
He explained that the move would allow China to provide manufacturing technology and produce higher quality products in the United States, and stressed that this approach would be "mutually beneficial, not one-sided."
The Joe Biden administration has decided not to approve Nippon Steel's acquisition of USstills, and President Trump also expressed opposition to the deal during the election campaign.
In the political world, the ruling party and some opposition parties responded positively. Yoshihiko Noda, leader of the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, commented that the application of the Japan-US Security Treaty to the Senkaku Islands had been confirmed.
However, he also indicated that he would "verify the contents of the summit in the National Assembly."
