Fishing boat capsizes off the coast of Cheju Island, South Korea... 5 rescued, 5 others being searched for
On the 12th, a fishing boat carrying 10 people capsized in the sea off Seogwipo, Cheju Island, South Korea. Despite a high wind and wave warning being issued, five people were rescued by 9 p.m., and the maritime police are investigating the remaining five.
According to the Jeju Regional Coast Guard, the 32-ton vessel "2066 Jaesong" (1 person on board) was found at around 7:56 pm on the same day in the sea about 12 kilometers from Pyoseon-myeon, Seogwipo-si.
The maritime police arrived at the scene at around 8 p.m. and discovered the capsized vessel. The rescue operation included three people from a lifeboat, one from the vessel, and a drifting man.
One crew member was rescued, along with one Indonesian, three Vietnamese, and the Korean captain, all of whom are in good health.
The Coast Guard transported the rescued people to Manjanggang Port in Seogwipo City.
All available resources were mobilized, including 12 naval vessels, the Seogwipo Coast Guard Rescue Team, the Jeju Coast Guard Special Attack Unit, two coastal rescue boats, three related agencies (two naval vessels and one local government), four civilian fishing boats, and one aircraft.
At 2:00 p.m., when the accident occurred, a wind and wave warning had been issued, and strong winds of 18 to 20 meters per second and waves exceeding 3 meters were observed in the area.
