Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering unveils nuclear container ship design model for the first time (Korea)
Korea Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, a major shipbuilding company, recently unveiled the design model of a nuclear container ship for the first time.
The company had obtained Approval in Principle (AIP) from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for its TEU (Twenty-foot equivalent) class container ships.
Unlike conventional ships, nuclear container ships do not require fuel tanks or other equipment.
The ship's design model was made more economical by allowing containers to be loaded into the engine room, which previously required a large amount of space, and also used double-bottom tanks made of stainless steel and other materials to shield against radiation.
The company has introduced a supercritical carbon dioxide propulsion system, jointly developed with Baker Hughes, a major U.S. oilfield services company, to ensure safety.
Compared to the current system, the thermal efficiency has been improved by about 5%. In the future, the company plans to build nuclear power-related facilities at its Future Technology Testing Center and verify their safety.
"We will start with the land-based SMR manufacturing business and then expand to the second stage," said Park Sang-min, head of the company's green energy research lab.
We also plan to complete the development of our offshore nuclear power business by 2030."
