The Coast Guard has begun an underwater search to locate missing persons from the 22nd Seogyeong, which sank off the coast of Yeosu, South Jeolla Province.
On the 14th, the Central Marine Special Rescue Team of the Korea Coast Guard set up guidelines for divers for underwater searches in the accident area near Geomundo, Yeosu City.
Shortly after 9:00 a.m., two underwater search team members entered the sea and conducted a search up to a depth of 30 meters. At the time of the search, underwater visibility was about 1 to 1.5 meters.
Two members of the Roka team conducted an underwater search up to a depth of 60 meters, but were unable to find the missing person. The Maritime Police conducted a scuba search up to a depth of 30 meters and a search at a depth of 60 meters.
The hull of the Seogyong was found to be 20m deeper, at 82.8m below the surface, as a result of side scan sonar surveys by the Coast Guard.
The search authorities are continuing the sea search with 34 ships and two aircraft. At around 1:41 a.m. on the 9th of this month, 139 people were found dead in the sea about 17 kilometers east of Yeosu City, South Jeolla Province.
The 22nd Seogyong, a large trawler of 14 tons, sank. As of now, five people have died and five are missing as a result of the accident.
