Mayor Hong posted on his Facebook page on the 16th, "This is the first time since the 1980s that a rally by a conservative group that drew tens of thousands of people has been held on Geumnam-ro in Gwangju."
He added, "Geumnam-ro is a symbolic street of Gwangju's democratization, and the fact that a conservative group held a rally against impeachment there shows how much Gwangju, the city of light, is changing."
"Korea cannot be united unless the wall between East and West and the wall between conservatives and progressives come down," he said.
Mayor Hong said, "By breaking down our prejudices and stubbornness and coming out into the square as one,
"A united Korea will be able to usher in an era of a developed nation," he said, adding, "I look forward to that day."
