日米韓が外相会議…「台湾の国際機関への参加を支持」
Japan, US and South Korea hold foreign ministers' meeting to ”support Taiwan's participation in international organizations”
Japan, the United States and South Korea agreed to support "Taiwan's participation in international organizations." On the 15th (local time), the three countries held their first foreign ministers' meeting since the second Donald Trump administration in Munich, Germany.
South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yeol, US Secretary of State Marcos Benjamin Lee Rubio, and Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya issued a joint statement on the same day stating that they "support Taiwan's meaningful participation in appropriate international organizations."
This is the first time that the three countries have included such content in a statement, and it is seen as reflecting the Trump administration's determination to pursue a tougher policy against China.
On the other hand, Taiwan has so far been unable to join international organizations such as the United Nations due to opposition from China, so this agreement is likely to provoke a backlash from China.
In response to such concerns, a South Korean Foreign Ministry official said, "Our basic position on Taiwan remains unchanged," and "We respect the 'one China' position."
That hasn't changed," he emphasized.
