The powerful "poison" of the Black Mamba moves the wall of the chorus seating at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall at high speed, and the piano melody dances avant-garde, transporting the audience into a world of adventure.
A completely new genre was born. When SM Entertainment's long-standing legacy, which they call "the beginning of K-POP" and "everything," meets classical music, "a new world of music" is born.
It was a meeting of the best. It was the meeting of the best, SM Entertainment, the leader in K-pop, and the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, the leader in K-classical music.
"SM CLASSICS LIVE 2025 with Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra" will be held at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall on the 14th and the Lotte Concert Hall on the 15th.
The concert was held at the Seoul Philharmonic Hall in Seoul, South Korea, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of SM Entertainment, the 80th anniversary of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, and the 20th anniversary of the foundation.
Until now, there have been many encounters between popular music and classical music.
Starting with the encounter between the band Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, pop music has attempted to meet classical music on special occasions.
While it was common for Dee to be performed by an orchestra, this time it was different. SM Entertainment, the only classical music label in Korea, is a subsidiary of SM Entertainment.
This is a compilation of 18 SM Entertainment masterpieces arranged by CLASSICS over the past five years in orchestral versions with a wide range of classical composers.
The Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra was conducted by Kim Yu-won, who is active in a wide range of fields including classical and traditional Korean music. This performance was quite different from the usual audience of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra's regular concerts.
As of February 14th, 40.8% of the tickets for this concert were accessed through the ticket advance sales website Interpark by people in their 20s and 43.4% by people in their 30s.
It seemed to be a concert of this kind, and there were many foreign guests. Jaylon (25), who flew in from Hong Kong, said, "I'm a fan of NCT, but I also like other SM Entertainment music and artists.
"It was so refreshing to hear the band's version, and I was surprised that K-pop could change like this, so I came here to listen to it in person," he said.
Starting with the orchestral version of "Red Flavor" by Red Velvet, the first song released by CLASSICS, this album includes all the songs that CLASSICS has worked on with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra.
The program consisted of songs from the full album "Across The New World" released recently, as well as songs that have yet to be released.
The concert began with SHINee's Minho appearing with a narration inviting the audience into the world of a magnificent new genre.
The concert opened with "Welcome To SMCU Palace," a song that takes the viewer into the world of the band, like an opera overture, and shortly thereafter "Akai Aji" was performed.
In "Red Flavor," Red Velvet's representative summer song, the members' voices are accompanied by sweet woodwind sounds. The rhythmic percussion accompaniment adds a fast dance rapping touch.
The members, who brought the song to life, entertained the ears and eyes by playing finger snaps while holding the instruments. The final lyrics, which are filled with innocent excitement, deepened the sadness.
The song was performed by Wayne Lin, associate conductor (first violin) of the Uruguay Symphony Orchestra, and the lyrics were, "What I like most is you in the summer."
The late Jung Hee sampled Debussy's "Clair de Lune" and performed it with an oboe and clarinet melody.
Jung's "End of the Day" was marked by buttons bearing the tears of not only "Shawol" (short for SHINee's fan name, "SHINee World"), but also those of the SM Entertainment staff who attended the concert that day.
When the lyrics "Thank you, thank you so much, you are my pride" filled the entire wall, many in the audience had tears in their eyes.
The way the concert was organized was also outstanding. The 18 pieces on the program were based on powerful performances, so listening to them one after the other was exhausting for the audience.
There were fears, but the concert featured three songs in a row, giving the audience a little time to breathe. Although the band focused on fast-paced dance music, they also included a ballad every three or four songs, giving the audience a break.
It was a point that made the band stand out. Each song was enjoyable to listen to. The music made use of the charm of existing songs, but some of them featured completely different arrangements.
"Mamba" makes use of the chorus points while creating a unique atmosphere with variations that go back and forth between classical and modern music.
Some songs were impressive, with classical music and K-POP coming together. "EXO"
"Growl" by MV Music features Beethoven's Symphony "Fate," "Red Velvet's" Psycho" features Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 2, and "TVXQ's" Rising Sun" features MV Music.
The encore song, "Sun," was performed with the third movement of Vivaldi's Concerto No. 2 in G minor, RV 315, "Summer." The encore song, "Light," by "HOT," was performed with the third movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, "Concerto No. 1 in G minor, RV 315, "Summer."
The meeting between "Light" and "Choir" was even more exquisite. In fact, like the structure of the "Choir," the main motif appears while announcing the opening of "Light," and gently illuminates the climax.
The song ended with "Light," which is called the "patriotic song of SM Entertainment" and is the final song of the SM Town concert, and the meeting of "Chorus," a song of hope for humanity, has continued for a long time and is a new departure.
The two-hour concert was a grand and meaningful event that once again demonstrated the performance skills of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, which is known as the best in both name and reality.
The orchestra version of K-POP that was presented through the group was not a performance for a "live performance." Park In-young, Kang Han-mae, Lee Gwang-il, Jeong Ji-won, Choi
Composers such as Hyuk Ryeol and Jo In Woo have dismantled the song piece by piece and presented it with a high degree of difficulty.
Then comes the feast of brass instruments, which are used as seasoning in existing orchestras. Percussion instruments explode without pause, matching the precise rhythm, and each solo part must produce a smooth sound.
Kim Mi-yeon, a member of the Seoul Symphony Orchestra, said, "It was not easy to get all the instruments to play the same sound and rhythm as if they were machines."
The members of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, who said that they were "so busy looking at the score that their eyes were falling out" right after the first rehearsal, delivered a top-level performance in the three rehearsals.
"Red Flavor" is of course "Girls' Generation's "Into The New World" and "Red Velvet's "Feel My
The music, which was completed with solo parts by Vice-President Wayne Lin, who played the ultimate high notes of "Rhythm" and other songs, was just a K-POP orchestra.
Classical music curator Lee Sang Min said, "When K-POP expands globally, we will be introducing an orchestral version.
"The attempt was very interesting and fun," he said, "Some of the songs that sampled classical music felt a little awkward, but I highly praised the bold and unusual challenge."
However, he also pointed out, "If they had used media art such as videos that could explain the existing songs a little more, I think the performance would have been more user-friendly for the audience."
CLASSICS is promoting its performance and sheet music IP licensing business in earnest, and will be presenting orchestral versions of K-POP songs around the world. Next year, we will be meeting the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.
I'm waiting.
