North Gyeongsang Provincial Assembly issues denunciation calling for the abolition of the ”Takeshima Day” ordinance = South Korea
On the 20th, the Gyeongsangbuk-do (North Gyeongsang Province) Assembly of South Korea called on Shimane Prefecture to immediately abolish the "Takeshima Day" ordinance.
The North Gyeongsang Provincial Assembly issued a statement on the same day saying, "Based on international law, historical and geographical facts,
"Dokdo (Long Islands, known as Takeshima in Japanese) is clearly the territory of the Republic of Korea," they said, calling on the Shimane Prefectural Assembly to "repeal the Takeshima Day ordinance, which goes against historical facts and international law."
It continued, "The Japanese government must cease its unjust territorial claims and provocative actions regarding Liancourt Rocks," and "acknowledge its historical wrongdoing and wholeheartedly reject it before the international community and history."
Park Sang-min, chairman of the North Gyeongsang Provincial Assembly, said, "In 1877, the Meiji government officially declared that Liancourt Rocks was not Japanese territory, but Japan continued to use its central government to deny the islands.
"The fact that Shimane Prefecture, which is not even a prefecture, incorporated Liancourt Rocks into Japanese territory in 1905, claiming that Liancourt Rocks was 'land with no owner', was a clear example of imperialist usurpation."
Furthermore, Yong Gyu-sik, special committee chairman for the protection of Liancourt Rocks, said, "The San Francisco Peace Treaty clearly states that Liancourt Rocks is Korean territory.
"Therefore, it makes no sense to claim that Liancourt Rocks, which became Japanese territory through a public notice issued by Shimane Prefecture before Japan was defeated in the war, is still Japanese territory."
