As the impeachment trial of President Yoon Seok-yeol by the Constitutional Court approaches, a rally against the impeachment was held in Daejeon, with many citizens chanting slogans against the impeachment.
At 2 p.m. on the 22nd, people gathered near the city hall in Seo-gu, Daejeon, to protest against the impeachment. Despite the chilly weather, the citizens were wearing thick jackets, hats and gloves.
Citizens of various ages, from their 20s to their 60s, waved the American flag and the Korean Taegeukgi while shouting slogans calling for the impeachment bill to be dismissed.
Citizens were seen vigorously waving signs with slogans such as "Let's protect a free Republic of Korea." Some citizens attended the rally with their children and wore kimonos to keep warm.
Some people bought and ate den. The police deployed 550 riot police to ensure a safe rally, and it is estimated that more than 10,000 people participated in the rally.
"This is a fight for free democracy and we are grateful to the president for being detained," People Power lawmaker Yoon Sang Hyun said at the rally.
"The current situation is a denial of liberalism and the rule of law," he said. "The High Ranking Officials Investigation Agency, which has no investigative powers, investigated and issued various warrants, which is illegal. This is why you are coming out to the square.
"I learned that the government has been fighting for freedom, democracy and the rule of law," he said. A man in his 30s who attended the rally said, "I don't know much about politics in Daegu, but I'm a big supporter of the Free Democratic Party.
"I have been participating in rallies to uphold justice and prevent the Democratic Party from taking over the legislative dictatorship," he said. "I came to Daejeon after participating in all the rallies held in Seoul, Busan, Daegu and Gwangju.
Without freedom, there would be no family or religion, and we would end up in communism. I came to realize this when President Yoon declared emergency martial law, and I think this was a really good move.
We must continue this rally with the belief that freedom will prevail until we defeat the anti-national forces." Another woman in her 60s said, "I decided to join this rally to prevent the president from being impeached.
" He must never be impeached," he said. Meanwhile, a pro-impeachment rally is scheduled to be held in the area around the Milky Way intersection in Ota Nishi Ward from 4 p.m. on the same day.
