The site will include 450,000 square meters of land for materials, parts, and equipment manufacturers, and 400,000 square meters of land for infrastructure. Construction was originally scheduled to begin in March, but the city formed a construction permit task force and delayed approval.
The rapid implementation of these measures enabled the start of construction in February. The company will gradually build a total of four factories in the Yongin Cluster. The first phase of construction is scheduled to be completed in May 2027.
The cluster will be a production base for next-generation DRAM memory, including high-bandwidth memory (HMB), to meet the rapidly growing demand for memory semiconductors for artificial intelligence (AI).
The plan is to build a "mini-fab" (semiconductor factory) to support the development, demonstration, and evaluation of technology by Korean material, parts, and equipment manufacturers.
This is a research facility with 300mm wafer manufacturing equipment, which will enable the technology to be perfected by providing an environment similar to that of an actual manufacturing site.
SK Hynix said it will "strive to improve the competitiveness of Korea's semiconductor industry together with approximately 500 semiconductor material, component and equipment manufacturers."
