韓国与党、李代表の控訴審で懲役2年求刑に「韓国の法治が生きていることを証明せねばならない」
South Korea's ruling party responds to two-year prison sentence for Lee in appeal hearing: ”We must prove that the rule of law in South Korea is alive and well”
On the 26th, South Korea's ruling People Power Party announced at the closing hearing of the appeal trial against Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung, who was indicted on suspicion of violating the Public Offices Election Act, that the prosecution had sought a two-year prison sentence for Lee.
Regarding the sentence, he said, "Now is the time for the judiciary to prove that the rule of law in Korea is alive and well through a verdict based on common sense and justice."
"Law and justice are fair to everyone," the party's chief spokesman, Shin Dong Wook, said in a commentary.
He added, "Publicizing false facts is a serious crime that shakes the foundations of democracy," and emphasized, "A fair verdict is the way to protect democracy."
Citing Lee's remarks, Shin also said, "Everything in the world follows common sense and principles."
Meanwhile, Rep. Park Jeong-hoon of the same party told Fei Subook, "
"It is nonsense that a person who eats the country's food without any money should be discussing the future of the country, or indeed his own future," he wrote, adding, "I hope that the prison sentence will be finalized and that justice, however delayed, will be properly delivered."
During his time as a presidential candidate, Lee was indicted on charges of false reporting, saying in a television interview that he did not know Kim Moon-ki, former director of the Seongnam Urban Development Corporation's Development Department 1.
He was sentenced to one year in prison, including the loss of his job, suspended for two years. The appeal court's decision is expected to be announced as early as the end of next month.
