Man who bought lottery tickets with stolen money after murder appeals 30-year prison sentence given by first trial - South Korea

The next day, the prosecution, which had sought life imprisonment in the first trial, also appealed to the court on the grounds that the sentence was inappropriate. The prosecution stated, "Considering the death of the victim, the cruelty of the crime, and the pain of the surviving family, we cannot accept the sentence we sought.
"The defendant should be sentenced to life imprisonment as prescribed by the Supreme Court," he said, explaining the reason for the appeal. Prior to this, the prosecution had cited the brutality of the crime, the seriousness of the damage, the public interest, and the fact that the victim's family had requested the disclosure of personal information.
Considering the above, the police decided to release Kim's identity. Kim is accused of murdering a man in his 40s, Mr. A, in a parking lot in Seosan, Chungcheongnam-do, at around 10 p.m. on November 8 last year.
After committing the crime, Kim fled in A's car, abandoned A's body and set the car on fire.
At the time, Kim stole 120,000 won in cash from Ms. A and used the money to eat out and spend 60,000 won (approximately 6,200 yen).
It was determined that he had bought a considerable amount of lottery tickets. The first-instance court sentenced Kim to 30 years in prison. The court stated, "Human life is the root of human existence, the highest good protected by law, and the most dignified value.
The court explained the reason for the sentence by saying, "Although the amount is limited, this was violated and the crime is of an extremely serious nature." It also took into consideration the fact that after the crime, the defendant used the stolen cash to buy cigarettes and other items and arrived at work as usual."
