South Korea's population has decreased by 450,000 in five years... Deaths exceed births
Although the number of births in South Korea last year showed an "increase," the population has "decreased" by more than 450,000 people in the past five years. This figure is based on the population (resident registrations as of December last year)
According to the Korea National Statistical Office's National Statistics Portal (KOSIS) and provisional population trends on the 3rd, last year's population was 120,000.
The natural decrease was 1,000. Although the number of births was 238,000, an increase of 8,000 from the previous year, the number of deaths (358,000) still far exceeded the number of births.

The natural decline is expected to be 33,000 from 2020 (minus 33,000 people) due to the COVID-19 virus.
Following the infectious disease outbreak in 2021 (minus 57,000 cases), the numbers have remained negative for the three years up to 2022 (minus 124,000 cases), 2023 (minus 122,000 cases), and last year.
The population has declined by 456,000 people in the past five years.
According to the Statistics Korea's future population projections, South Korea's population is expected to decline to 36.22 million (1977 level) by 2072.
