The Chungnam branch of the National Agricultural Products Quality Control Service (NAQC) has announced that it has arrested a souvenir shop in Sejong City, Bammai, on suspicion of violating the Country of Origin Labeling Act.
On the 4th, it was revealed that the company's CEO, Mr. A, had been referred to prosecutors. From February 2023 to October last year, Mr. A manufactured bread made primarily from Greek and Chinese peaches, and imported and domestic rice.
During this period, 248,448 units of the product were sold, with total sales of 620 million won.
In order to avoid being caught, Mr. A purchased peaches and rice from Sejong and displayed them inside his shop. Even after he was caught, he requested documents from his business partners that listed quantities lower than the actual amount in order to reduce the amount of the violation.
There are also cases where the crime was planned and evidence was destroyed. The company produces souvenir bread with a Hangul motif, and sells it as a gift in return for a hometown donation program (similar to the hometown tax system in Japan).
Mr. A’s crimes came to light in September last year when the National Agricultural Products Quality Control Agency filed charges against the company’s representative while investigating a case of false country of origin labeling by the company.
Company A was given administrative sanctions as a result of the crackdown by the National Agricultural Product Quality Control Agency. The agency then seized and investigated the company and its raw material suppliers, and found that the country of origin had been falsely reported for one year and nine months.
We have confirmed the facts stated above. We have also discovered that Company A created false applications stating that the products used were local agricultural products and received subsidies of over 200 million won from Sejong City and the Agricultural Technology Center.
An official from the Agricultural Products Quality Control Service said, "The company was selected for and received subsidies from a national and local government budget through false country of origin labeling, and the company is also involved in the sale of commemorative items with Hangeul motifs.
"We determined the seriousness of the crime to be high, taking into account the significant meaning that Binpan has for Sejong city, and secured the details of the violation through compulsory investigations, including the execution of seizure warrants."
