Kardashian sparks outrage after placing 18m bikini balloon in middle of New York
A marketing event for SKIMS, the lingerie brand run by American Hollywood celebrity and businesswoman Kim Kardashian, has been criticized for being outdated.
On the 5th (local time), Reuters reported that "On this day, SKIMS set up a 60-foot (about 18 meters) giant bikini-clad figure in the middle of New York's Times Square.
The large balloons were set up to celebrate the launch of the brand's new swimwear line, a blue triangle bikini similar to the one Kardashian wore in a recent photo shoot.
The balloon was created with the model lying down with both arms raised above her head on a 1.2m-high blue deck with the brand logo engraved on it.
When the installation was revealed, netizens immediately responded with a mixture of ridicule.
It looks like the boat doesn't want to be here either," one user quipped, while another said, "It's not appropriate as it's a public place where children can see it."
It also described the video as "an unrealistic portrayal of women's bodies" and "vulgar, unrelatable marketing of the worst kind."
In addition, there were negative reactions such as "Who approved this?" and "It's an invasion of public space." In the midst of such criticism, Kardashian posted on her SNS
"I can't believe my giant swimsuit balloon is in the middle of Times Square," she wrote, sharing a photo of the balloon.
Meanwhile, SKIMS, launched in 2019, specializes in shapewear, loungewear, homewear, and innerwear.
SKIMS is a global leader in fashion, design and manufacturing. Its sales last year were $750 million, and the company is valued at $4 billion.
