A video released by YouTuber "Tukapi" in August last year titled "Is this really all the food on Ulleungdo that costs 72,000 won?" has recently been gaining renewed attention online.
On that day, the filming team of "Dukapyi" said, "We entered a restaurant while walking around Ulleungdo. Actually, this is a restaurant we've been to before."
The group looked at the menu and thought for a while, but eventually decided to order a set meal for six people for 12,000 won (about 1,224 yen). The restaurant owner asked, "Do you have a set meal menu?
When asked, "What kind of food do you like?" he replied, "There is no menu, just seaweed." The side dishes served at the restaurant were oden, kimchi, quail eggs, fried anchovies, seaweed salad, namul, and kimchi.
The menu consisted of fried seaweed, squid innards, and other side dishes. The group paid a total of 72,000 won (about 7,343 yen) for the set meal. When the group asked, "Is this the last side dish?" the restaurant owner replied,
"This is Ulleungdo," he replied, "We are the restaurant that serves the most side dishes. Other restaurants only serve five side dishes." To which the group replied with fake laughs, "Ulleungdo, right?"
The "Tukapui" group said, "We were shocked and burst out laughing. Wherever we went, (side dishes) were served in full," and "They were served little by little, telling us to share them among the three of us, and we thought, "We're just going to eat them anyway."
After eating and paying the bill, the manager of Tukapi said, "Every time I come to Ulleungdo, I hate the attitude that it's natural for things to be expensive.
"I really dislike attitudes like, 'It's expensive because it's an island,' 'Ulleungdo is different,' and 'You can drink the natural water on Ulleungdo and it's delicious,'" he said.
They also said that the price of the restaurant's samgyeopsal with squid has increased further, saying, "Before,
It used to be 14,000 won (about 1,428 yen), but now it's 20,000 won (about 2,039 yen)," they added. Finally, they told their subscribers, "When you come to Ulleungdo,
"Don't eat at Kuno's restaurant. I went to a noodle shop that an old lady at the guesthouse I was staying at yesterday recommended to me, and they were very kind to me," he said bitterly.
Viewers who saw the video commented, "The restaurant owner is spreading the word not to come to Ulleungdo," "There's no main dish, and they don't even serve jjigae.
Responses included, "It's strange that it costs 12,000 won for something like that," and "When I go to Ulleungdo, I'll buy a lunch box before boarding the boat."
