Attention is growing on when the Constitutional Court will hand down its verdict in the impeachment trial of President Yoon Seok-yeol. Two weeks have passed since the conclusion of arguments on the 25th of last month, but the verdict has yet to be delivered.
No date has been announced. In the impeachment trials of former presidents Roh Moo-hyun and Park Geun-hye, the verdict was handed down within two weeks of the end of arguments.
The verdict for the president was handed down 14 days after the end of arguments, and for former President Park Geun-hye 11 days after. The sentencing dates for both cases were announced three and two days prior to the verdict, respectively.
Initially, the legal profession predicted that the ruling would likely be made on the 14th due to this precedent, but the Constitutional Court decided not to handed down the ruling to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, including Chief Prosecutor Lee Chang-soo.
With the impeachment trial of the three and Board of Audit and Inspection Commissioner Choi Jae-hae teasing a verdict on the 13th, the prevailing view is that it is unlikely that major cases will be handed down in succession every other day.
Currently, it is believed that the verdict will most likely be handed down on the 18th or 21st. If this date is reached, the time it will take from the National Assembly's impeachment bill to the verdict is 1.2 hours.
The length of time for the impeachment trial will surpass that of former President Park Geun-hye (91 days), making it the longest-running impeachment trial of a president in history. Some have expressed concern over the illegality and substance of the impeachment trial procedures.
As there are many points to consider and the judges' opinions on the issues are divided, it is possible that a verdict may be handed down at the end of March if sufficient consideration is given.
One factor that could affect the timing of the impeachment trial of President Yoon is the possibility that President Yoon's side, who was released following the court's decision to revoke his detention, may further raise allegations of procedural irregularities.
Questions include whether Judge Ma Eun-hyuk will join the trial, and whether it will be related to other impeachment trials involving Prime Minister Han Deok-soo and others involved in the declaration of emergency martial law.
In particular, although the final arguments in the impeachment trial of Prime Minister Han took place before those in the case of President Yoon, the date for the verdict has yet to be set.
Some have suggested that the verdict may have been delayed while the two sides deliberated a case involving the declaration of emergency law.
The Constitutional Court said, "The contents of deliberations, cases, progress, time, and location are all confidential."
While adhering to its position, the court has stated only that "the date for the presentation of important cases will be announced after the parties involved have been notified of the date and have confirmed receipt."
