Putin agrees in principle to ceasefire proposal with Ukraine, further discussion needed
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on the 13th (local time) that he supports in principle the proposal for a 30-day ceasefire with Ukraine, but that further discussions are needed.
He made clear his intention to discuss the details with US President Donald Trump and make the situation more favorable for Russia.
At a press conference after a summit with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko at the Kremlin on the same day, President Putin said,
"The idea itself is correct, but there are issues that need to be discussed," he said. He then revealed that he may have a phone call with President Trump to discuss the details of the ceasefire plan.
"We support the idea of ending this conflict through peaceful means," he said. The United States and Ukraine agreed on the "30-day ceasefire agreement" after talks in Saudi Arabia on the 11th of last month.
In response to this, President Putin made clear his Russian position that it would be difficult to accept it immediately.
However, he stressed that it should lead to long-term peace and address the root causes of conflict.
They also raised questions about whether the 30-day ceasefire would be used for "weapons supplies" and "training newly mobilized forces," and how the ceasefire would be monitored for possible violations.
President Putin said the situation on the battlefield, where Russia currently has the upper hand, is changing rapidly and that "Russia will take into account the situation on the ground and decide the next steps to end the conflict."
We will negotiate," he said.
