"We will never be a part of the United States," he said at a press conference after taking the oath of office in Ottawa.
Carney's comments come as President Trump has repeatedly said in recent weeks that Canada should be absorbed into the United States. He has also threatened to impose strong sanctions on Canada.
Prime Minister Carney responded to President Trump's claim that Canada would become the 51st state of the United States by saying, "The United States is not Canada."
"We are the masters of our own home. It's up to us to decide," he said. "By its very nature, we are not part of the U.S.
"There will be no incorporation of the country into the Korean peninsula. Economically, that is not what we should do," he said. "What we as a government should do is to strengthen our domestic economy and cooperate with various partners overseas."
"That will make it clearer" how the two countries differ from each other, he said.
