People's Power lawmaker Ahn Cheol-soo makes heartfelt appeal: ”President Yoon Seok-yeol and the ruling and opposition parties should both send a 'message of acceptance to the Constitutional Court'” (South Korea)
With the impeachment trial of President Yoon Seok-yeol by the Constitutional Court imminent, Ahn Cheol-soo, a member of the ruling party, has called for the Constitutional Court to sanction President Yoon, the ruling party, and the opposition party.
He called for a message of acceptance to be sent out to the judge. He also called on citizens not to use violence. On the 16th, Rep. Ahn posted on his blog, "Acceptance is not surrender.
"The Constitutional Court's decision is the ignition point for civil war and bloodshed, and the sense of crisis is reaching an all-time high that could destabilize the Republic of Korea.
"During the impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye in 2017, four citizens died in a violent incident in front of the Constitutional Court. The current situation is far more serious than it was then," he said.
He continued, "Violent incidents must be prevented at all costs. If the government is aware of the signs of an accident in advance and fails to prevent it, it is an abdication of national responsibility."
First, Ahn said to the leadership of the ruling and opposition parties, "We must announce a bipartisan message of acceptance. Before the Constitutional Court's ruling, both the ruling and opposition parties should hold an official meeting and announce their message of acceptance of the ruling."
"We must put aside party interests and demonstrate a responsible stance to avert a national crisis," he wrote.
"I would like to ask President Yoon to fulfill his responsibilities as the national leader.
"I want the president to fulfill his duties and obligations. Whatever the outcome, a genuine message of acceptance from the president that he will obey will have a powerful effect in preventing national chaos and unrest."
He added, "As the head of state of the Republic of Korea, I want you to comfort both the pro-impeachment and anti-impeachment people. That's what a president should do."
Rep. Ahn also said of Choi Sang-mok, acting president, that he would “minimize the confusion before and after the Constitutional Court ruling.”
"I want the government to take all possible measures to prevent this. We must mobilize all the national power necessary to prevent an extreme situation," he said.
We must be prepared. The atmosphere at the rally is as tense as a civil war. We absolutely must not allow a tragedy to occur. We must be prepared for any eventuality and be fully prepared to deal with any situation immediately.
I want you to come up with a plan to deal with this issue." Rep. Yasu also appealed to citizens, saying, "I understand your passionate patriotism, to the point of giving your lives, but if the rule of law collapses, there will be no country. Violence will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
"I ask you to think carefully about this for the sake of the future of the Republic of Korea and our children. I ask this from the bottom of my heart," he said.
