Former People's Power leader Han Dong-hoon: ”Accepting the results of President Yoon Seok-yeol's impeachment is not a choice but a given” - South Korea
Han Dong-hoon, former leader of the ruling People's Power Party, said on the 16th that President Yoon must accept the results of the Constitutional Court's impeachment trial against President Yoon Seok-yeol.
Han, the former chairman of the National Assembly, said after visiting the Full Gospel Church in Yeouido, Seoul that day that he met with reporters and said, "President Yoon has no intention of resigning in response to the impeachment trial decision.
In response to the question, "Some have pointed out that we need to send a message that we will accept it," he replied, "Acceptance is not a choice, but a natural thing in a country with a liberal democratic system."
He also said, "I expect the Constitutional Court to make a decision that is in line with the Constitution and its spirit." Former Chairman Han said he was aware of the recent announcement by Democratic Party Chairman Lee Jae-myung that "the opportunity to amend the Constitution must not be missed."
Regarding his remarks, he argued, "It is important to align the terms of office of members of parliament and the president. A shortening of the next president's term must be a given."
He added, "Chairman Lee would not say such a thing. If he is determined to do so himself under the current system, he will destroy the 1987 system.
"It will be difficult to sort things out and move forward into a new era," he said. Han had previously said he would push for constitutional reform to shorten the next president's term to three years and introduce a four-year re-election system.
Pro-Han Dong-hoon lawmakers, including Han Ji-ah, Jeong Seong-kuk, and Jin Jong-oh, also attended the service that day.
