”I can't afford to raise my newborn baby”: Seven mothers given suspended sentences in South Korea for giving their newborn baby to strangers
Mothers who gave their newborn babies to strangers over the internet because they were unable to raise them for financial reasons have been given suspended prison sentences.
On the 18th, the Daegu District Court sentenced seven mothers, including Defendant A (27), who was indicted for giving illegitimate children to others (violating the Child Welfare Act).
He also ordered them to take a 40-hour course in child trafficking prevention.
The defendants met on the Internet between 2009 and 2017 after giving birth to their children.
The defendants were on trial for allegedly handing the newborn baby over to Mr. B, who had been indicted on the same charges. Five of the defendants had their hospital expenses paid for by Mr. B. Mr. B has also been indicted on the same charges and is currently on trial.
An investigative source said that B does not work for an institution related to children or adolescents.
The court ruled that "he illegally gave up his child for adoption or abandoned him, which he should have protected and raised.
However, we took into consideration the fact that Defendant B actually took the child with the intention of raising him and appears to have raised him relatively well."
